After analyzing the DJing industry in Uganda and world over, it has become clear that there are several types of DJs with varying skill sets and areas of expertise. In order to better understand the DJing landscape in Uganda, it is important to classify these different types of DJs and highlight the unique qualities that each type brings to the industry. By doing so, you will gain a deeper appreciation for the craft of DJing and the diverse talents that exist within it.
TYPES OF DJS

As the world of music continues to evolve, so does the art of DJing. The music industry has always been in a state of constant evolution, with new genres and sub-genres emerging every year. In recent years, we’ve seen the rise of exciting new music genres like Amapiano and Kizomba,Kwaito which have captured the attention of music lovers worldwide. These genres have taken the world by storm, with their infectious beats and unique sound, bringing a fresh perspective to the music scene. and the advent of new technology, DJing has become more diverse than ever before. DJs are no longer limited to just playing at nightclubs and parties; they can now be found in various media and events. Here are some of the different types of DJs and what makes them unique.
– Radio DJs
Radio DJs play music on the radio. They are responsible for selecting music, creating playlists, and entertaining listeners with their personality and banter. Unlike other types of DJs, radio DJs have a more structured format and are required to follow station guidelines. They play music that appeals to a broader audience and is suitable for radio airplay. Radio DJs are great at keeping listeners entertained during their daily commutes, and they are often the first to play new music.
– TV DJs
TV DJs, also known as VJs (DJ Bryan), play music videos on television. They are responsible for selecting music videos, creating playlists, and introducing videos to viewers. TV DJs often have to work within the parameters of a show, following a set list of videos or themes. They also need to be knowledgeable about music history, trends, and popular culture. TV DJs are great at entertaining viewers with a mix of music and visual content.
– Club DJs
Club DJs like Fem DJ Naselow Shortlegg DJ play music at nightclubs and parties. They are responsible for keeping the dance floor packed by selecting songs that appeal to the crowd and creating a seamless flow of music. Club DJs need to be skilled at reading the crowd, knowing when to switch up the tempo or genre, and creating a vibe that keeps people dancing all night long. Club DJs often have a signature sound or style, and they are great at creating a unique atmosphere for their audience.
– Event DJs
Event DJs play music at various events, including weddings, corporate events, and private parties. They are great at pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with turntables and other equipment. I draw a lot of inspiration from DJS like Grand Wizard Theodore (New York) DJ Puffy, Roy Teebwoy,DJ Jazzy Jeff, Sir Aludah, DJ Joe plus many others.
– Mixtape DJs
Mixtape DJs create mixtapes, which are compilations of songs mixed together seamlessly. Mixtape DJs such as DJ Simplesimon are responsible for selecting songs that complement each other, mixing them together, and creating a cohesive and enjoyable listening experience. Mixtape DJs often have a unique style and sound, and they are great at introducing listeners to new music and artists.Mixtapes have been around for decades, but they became particularly popular in the 1990s and 2000s, when hip-hop artists started releasing mixtapes as a way to showcase their skills and build a following. Mixtape DJs played a crucial role in the growth of hip-hop culture and helped to introduce new artists to a wider audience.
– Mobile DJs
Mobile DJs are professional DJs who specialize in providing music and entertainment for events that require travel. They are often hired for destination weddings, corporate events, and other events that take place in different locations. Travel DJs have to be able to pack their equipment and travel to different destinations, sometimes across the country or even internationally. They need to be able to transport their gear safely and efficiently, and be able to set it up quickly once they arrive at the event location.
In addition to their technical skills, mobile DJs also need to have strong communication and organizational skills. They need to be able to coordinate with event planners, venue staff, and other vendors to ensure that everything runs smoothly on the day of the event. Most DJs who own their own DJ gear can fall in this category.
– All-around DJs
All-around DJs are those who have the ability to excel in any type of DJing. They are versatile and can adapt to any genre of music, event, or crowd. These DJs have mastered the art of beatmatching, scratching, mixing, and programming, allowing them to seamlessly transition between tracks and create a unique and cohesive mix. Whether it’s a wedding, a club, a corporate event, or a music festival, all-around DJs can cater to any crowd and keep the energy flowing. They have a vast knowledge of music genres and can create a playlist that suits the event and the audience’s taste.
Their ability to read the crowd and adjust their style accordingly makes them stand out from the rest. They can play high-energy dance tracks or slow it down with some mellow tunes, depending on the mood and vibe of the event. In summary, all-around DJs are the ones who can be any type of DJ. From sharing the stage with world-renowned DJs at major music festivals to performing alongside local legends in intimate club settings, each experience has been unique and unforgettable.
